We're Building a House!
In Maine!
Let’s start with a quick background. My husband and I have been together since 2005. In 2009, we stayed in a beautiful home for my brother’s wedding. The house had a long lawn leading to the ocean (see below). We were completely smitten and agreed we’d live on the ocean one day, preferably in Maine. We love Maine, it’s where my husband grew up, it’s where we got married, it’s just a lovely place.
In the fall of 2019, we decided to pursue our live-on-the-ocean-in-Maine idea. Our plan was to purchase land and build a custom home. Our land wish list included: 2+ acres, privacy, and an elevated water view. After about eight months of research and site visits we closed on a plot of land in MidCoast Maine and signed a contract to work with the fabulous Caleb Johnson Studio.
There are many steps in the home building process (I will cover in a later post), but first, some general fun stuff. Our specifications for the house are: three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and lots of windows and airy spaces. The key design goal is a main floor with an open kitchen, living, dining space, and a loft-like second level. I’ve heard rumors of house design trends leaning back toward closed floor plans (to prioritize privacy and sound dampening), but an open floor plan definitely fits our preferences and lifestyle. I was heavily inspired by the image below of a home designed by Brandon Architects and Brooke Wagner Design.
Here is where we stand right now:
the house floor plan is set
working on the interior details
finalizing the site plans (driveway, landscaping, etc.)
hoping to start “moving dirt” in the next month or so
I will take you along for the ride. Check out some photos of views from our land below!
